One of the areas on the MónNatura Delta visit is the salt flats. The aim is to find out what they are and what their purpose is in this zone of the Ebro Delta. The saltworks are between the reception and services area, Espai Delta and the hide.

WHAT ARE THE SALTWORKS?

The saltworks are artificial pools (built by human beings) where the seawater evaporates because of the effect of the sun and the wind. The aim is to produce common salt.

SALT, A PRODUCT OF GREAT VALUE

Salt has been one of the most important elements in the history of the Ebro Delta. It played an essential part in the economy of Tortosa in the Middle Ages.

Apart from its culinary value, salt was an indispensable product for conserving food. It has also been used industrially, in cosmetics, in water treatment, in the manufacture of detergents and plastics and many other things. Salt was also important in the world of beliefs and traditions, since it was a symbol of friendship, of trust, of hospitality and, what is more, it was used to ward off illnesses and storms.
